Solution

Soil moisture and rock movement

Sensors measuring water and temperature in the ground for farming, research and infrastructure – and systems that monitor movement in rock and mines with TDR technology.

Detail from our example map. All values are made up.

What we measure

Measuring in the ground takes the right sensor, the right installation and a program that interprets the signals.

  • Soil moisture

The water content of the soil at one or more depths, for irrigation, farming and research.

  • Soil temperature

Temperature at different depths, for example for frost and the growing season.

  • Soil conductivity

Electrical conductivity, which says something about nutrients and salt in the soil.

  • Rock movement with TDR

A coaxial cable in a borehole, where a TDR measurement shows where and when the rock moves.

  • Groundwater

Level in groundwater wells with pressure sensors.

  • Weather on site

Precipitation and temperature needed to interpret the soil water balance.

What your data can look like

Soil moisture at three depths over two weeks. The rain shows up near the surface first and reaches deeper layers later.

How we deliver

The same person follows your station from the first sketch to service.

  1. Design

Choice of sensors and depths, and a plan for installation in soil or boreholes.

  2. Installation

Installation of sensors and cables, and commissioning of logger and communication.

  3. Data collection

Data via telemetry, with calculations and alarms in the logger program.

  4. Service

Service, sensor checks and remote troubleshooting.

Equipment we use

We choose instruments to suit the site and the task. These are often part of it.

Frequently asked questions

How does TDR work in rock?

A coaxial cable is grouted into a borehole. When the rock moves, the cable is deformed, and a TDR measurement shows where along the cable it happened.

How many soil moisture sensors are needed?

It depends on the soil type, the crop and what the measurement is for. Often several depths are measured at the same point.

Can you write the programs for the measurement?

Yes. We write CRBasic logger programs that interpret the signals, calculate the values and raise alarms when needed.
